Poolwerx Moggill Marathon Returns Sunday 18 May – A Community-Driven Celebration of Spirit, Challenge and Giving Back

Brisbane, QLD – Following the overwhelming success of last year’s event, the Poolwerx Moggill Marathon returns on Sunday 18 May 2025, promising an even bigger and bolder day out for runners, spectators and the entire West Brisbane community.

Proudly presented by the Lions Club of Brisbane West, the not-for-profit marathon festival is rapidly becoming a favourite on the Queensland running calendar, with its unique mix of serious race appeal, rural charm, and warm community energy.

Last year’s event raised a remarkable $31,000 for local charity Bravery Box and other community groups and schools – and this year, organisers hope to go even further.

“The event has grown beyond what we imagined,” says Event Chair David Ember. “It’s no longer just a race – it’s a celebration of community pride, inclusion, and the power of people coming together.”

2025 sees the return of the now AIMS-certified Poolwerx Moggill Marathon (42.2km) – just the second AIMS-certified marathon in Brisbane – offering runners a rare opportunity to compete on an officially measured course with true endurance credentials. From its humble beginnings during COVID lockdowns – when two locals ran the full distance through Moggill for fun – the event has grown into a professional, heart-led fixture, complete with the Ember Schoeman Shield, awarded to the fastest male and female marathoners.

Participants can choose from five official race distances, each backed by generous local sponsors: the Poolwerx Moggill Marathon, The Heritage Bank Community Branch Karalee ‘Road 2 Rural’ Half Marathon 21.1k, The Heritage Bank Community Branch Karalee ‘Mt Moggill’ 10km, The Local Bulletin 5K Fun Run, and the family-friendly Moggill Discount Drug Store 2K Fun Run. All races start from Kangaroo Gully Road and finish at the buzzing Westaway Park Event Village.

The course might bring the hills, but it’s the people that bring the heart. This year’s event celebrates more than athletic achievement – it’s a platform for community spirit and joy. The “Resident Cheer Squad Prize” will reward the most spirited photo snapped from driveways, balconies and cheering zones along the course, helping turn the neighbourhood into one giant cheer zone. The popular Fancy Dress Contest also returns to the 2K Fun Run, bringing colour, creativity and contagious enthusiasm to the day.

A new highlight for 2025 is the launch of the McAllister Community Spirit Shield, introduced as part of the 2K Schools Challenge. Named after John McAllister, the first teacher at Moggill State School in 1866, the shield honours the historic contribution of education in the area. It celebrates not just student participation but the collective effort of entire school communities – rewarding schools that show outstanding teamwork, enthusiasm and inclusivity. Competing for the McAllister Shield is about more than just crossing the line – it’s about belonging, resilience, and shared success.

Volunteers are the true champions of the Moggill Marathon, and with National Volunteer Week coinciding with the event, extra recognition will be given to the Moggill SES and the incredible support crew who make the event safe, welcoming and unforgettable.

Runners from 2024 offered heartfelt praise, with one describing it as “a real sense of community and such a beautiful place to run.” Another called it “tough but enjoyable with amazing volunteers and great vibes from start to finish.” Others praised the marshals, water stations, and festive finish line atmosphere. The sentiment was unanimous: they’ll be back – and they’re bringing friends.

With its growing reputation, official marathon certification, and community-driven purpose, the Poolwerx Moggill Marathon is a must-cover event for media seeking a feel-good local story with impact.
