A Community Event Built on Connection, Challenge and Giving Back

Brisbane, QLD – The Heritage Bank Moggill Marathon returns on Sunday 17 May 2026, celebrating five years of running, community and impact, and shaping up to be the biggest event yet for runners, spectators and the wider West Brisbane community.

Proudly presented by the Lions Club of Brisbane West, the not-for-profit marathon has grown from a local initiative into a well-supported event on the Brisbane running calendar, known for its mix of challenge, community connection and welcoming atmosphere.

In 2026, that momentum continues, with around 1,500 participants expected across all distances.

At the heart of the event is its commitment to giving back. Over the past five years, the Heritage Bank Moggill Marathon has raised more than $125,000 for Bravery Box and local community groups, helping make a meaningful difference for families in need.

This year marks an important step forward in the event’s partnerships, with Heritage Bank joining as naming rights sponsor. The event is also proudly supported by Hatch as Gold Sponsor and Moggill Discount Drug Store and FootMotion as Silver Sponsors, alongside a growing group of local businesses and community partners.

“The event has grown into something much bigger than just a run,” said Event Chair David Ember. “It’s about people coming together, pushing themselves, supporting each other and being part of something local.”

To mark the five-year milestone, two new initiatives will feature on race day. The Hatch Champion of Champions Half Marathon brings together past winners and new contenders, adding a competitive edge while linking performance to a broader community impact.

Alongside this, the People’s Champion, supported by Moggill Discount Drug Store, recognises runners who improve on their previous performances, celebrating personal progress and participation across the field.

Participants can choose from five race distances, including the Heritage Bank Moggill Marathon, Hatch Champion of Champions Half Marathon, the FootMotion 10km, the Local Bulletin 5km Fun Run and Moggill Discount Drug Stores 2km Fun Run, with all events starting from Kangaroo Gully Road and finishing at the Westaway Park event precinct.

A number of improvements have been introduced in 2026 to enhance the runner experience. A new finisher’s chute will improve safety, flow and recovery at the finish line, while music and activation beyond the finish line will create a more vibrant and engaging atmosphere for participants and spectators.

The Westaway Park precinct will again serve as a central hub on race day, with local businesses, food vendors and community groups contributing to a lively and welcoming environment.

The event also continues to encourage strong community participation, including a schools component through the McAllister Community Spirit Shield. This participant-driven initiative recognises schools with the highest levels of involvement across the 2km event, celebrating collective effort, inclusion and community spirit.

Schools are also able to support causes important to them, with participants given the opportunity to fundraise for their chosen charities as part of the event. This adds another layer of purpose to participation, connecting students, families and school communities to broader community impact.

Volunteers play a vital role in delivering the event, from course marshals and water stations through to the finish precinct, helping create a safe and enjoyable experience for all involved.

With its continued growth, strong community backing and visual appeal, the Heritage Bank Moggill Marathon offers a compelling local story, from first-time runners to experienced competitors, and from community fundraising to race day celebration.

Media opportunities include human interest stories, first-time marathon runners, returning competitors, and community fundraising initiatives linked to Bravery Box.

Media are warmly invited to attend. Key photo opportunities include the early morning race start, finish line moments, and presentations across all distances. Interviews with organisers, participants, volunteers and Bravery Box representatives are available upon request.
